Required qualifications and experience:
- PhD already awarded in history on a relevant topic (National Socialism/the Second World War and Nazi occupation/the Holocaust/Jewish history in Europe)
- Native proficiency in English
- Near-native proficiency in German
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team interacting with colleagues and with the editorial board

Preferred:
- Excellent knowledge of Russian
- Work experience in historical document editing or editing experience in publishing houses in the humanities
- Experience and knowledge of website management and editing and digital communication

The successful candidate is expected to make a strong contribution to the management of the translation into English of the German-language edition Die Verfolgung und Ermordung der europäischen Juden durch das nationalsozialistische Deutschland 1933-1945, published by De Gruyter. The project is a collaboration between the IfZ, the University of Freiburg, Yad Vashem and the German Federal Archives and is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). The 16 volumes span the whole of Nazi-occupied Europe and contain c. 5000 documents of victims, perpetrators and those not directly involved in the persecution. For the English-language edition, all the documents apart from a few documents originally in English are newly translated from the original source languages. Three volumes of the English-language edition have already been published.

The editor will assist in organizing the translation of the documents by external translators and in checking the accuracy and quality of the translations according to set guidelines and in consultation with the rest of the team. The editor will also take a lead in marketing activities in the English-speaking world. This will involve developing and maintaining an English-language project website currently in preparation, devising new digital content for the site, and implementing promotion activities targeting those in the English-speaking world who teach and research the history of the Holocaust.

The post is based in Berlin-Lichterfelde at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History. The post is available on a full-time basis from 1 July 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter until 30 April 2023. If funding beyond 2023 becomes available it may be possible to extend the post.
