New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach a course entitled "City as Text" for undergraduate students of NYU's Global Liberal Studies degree for the Fall 2019 semester (Sept 2 to Dec 19, 2019). The course provides an intensive academic exploration of the city through faculty-led critical excursions to historical centers, markets, industrial zones, artist quarters, and other points of interest, accompanied by scholarly readings that examine the historical and contemporary character of the city from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Candidates should be passionate about teaching, have a track record of academic publications in a related field, be fluent in English, and can have a variety of academic backgrounds (Cultural Studies, Urban Studies, History, Comparative Literature, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Sociology, Journalism). Important is a broad academic outlook and the ability to cater to the individual needs of the students.

The course meets once per week for two and a half hours on NYU Berlin's campus. The sessions are a mixture of lecture, discussions and field trips; for the assignments group work among the students is encouraged.

Course Description
Through scholarly and journalistic readings from interdisciplinary perspectives, the course will enable students to develop a nuanced understanding of the local, regional, national, and global forces that shape the character of Berlin. Critical excursions to historical centers, markets, industrial zones, artist quarters, and other points of interest, accompanied by scholarly readings, are an important component of the course and are meant to aid the students' cultural preparation and local immersion. Students will draw on the city as a primary resource for academic research and critical inquiry. They have to produce innovative research projects (digital or print) that reflect on the city at the crossroads of local and global identity.
