Prof. Dr. Jan Stievermann (History of Christianity in the US) at the Faculty of Theology, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, invites applications for:

1 Three-Year Ph.D. Position (TV-L E 13, 65%; January 1, 2021 – December 31, 2023) in a DFG-Funded Research Group on
"(Re-)Translating Scripture in Early American Protestantism: Cotton Mather’s “Biblia Americana.”

Application deadline: May 1, 2020.

Fully funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), the Ph.D. dissertation project will focus on the history of Bible translations and commentaries in British North America, and incorporate one or more aspects of the never-before-studied materials contained in volume 10 of the edition of Cotton Mather’s “Biblia Americana” (1693-1728), America’s first bible commentary. Volume 10 covers the biblical books of Hebrews to Revelation, plus a number of thematic tracts that Mather appended to the manuscript. In addition, the selected candidate will join a research group consisting of Prof. Dr. Jan Stievermann — editor of the “Biblia” edition — who will serve as the principle dissertation advisor, and Dr. Benjamin Pietrenka who is pursuing a book project on radical German Pietism related to this topic.

We target postgraduates with a background in one of the following disciplines: church history, history of theology, religious history, American history, American studies/literature, or religious studies.

Applicants must be fluent in English, hold an excellent master’s degree or equivalent, and a background in church/religious history and/or early American history that will allow them to develop an innovative dissertation project within the thematic focus of the Research Group.

The Ph.D. student must take residence in Heidelberg and enroll in the doctoral program at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg.

In Heidelberg, the Ph.D. student will find collaborative networks of European and North American scholars, individualized mentoring, colloquia and specialized seminars, and a structured qualification program tailored to academic as well as professional career paths.

Gross annual salary—predicated on the German public sector remuneration system (TV L E 13, 65%)—will start at € 32,400 per year, plus benefits (health, nursing care, pensions, and unemployment).

Application deadline: May 1, 2020.
