The Center for Religious Studies at Central European University invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow position for the second phase of the research project Striking from the Margins (SFM). The position will be granted for a period of 24 months, starting as soon as possible. Applications are invited from researchers working on issues related to gender regimes under conditions of continuing conflict in Syria or Iraq, or alternatively Libya or Yemen. Based in Budapest, the position will also entail regular activities at the CEU Vienna campus and with various international and local partners there and in the Middle East.
The first phase of Striking from the Margins charted novel analytical and conceptual departures into addressing the complex dynamical relations between state, religion, and society in the rapidly changing context of the Middle East. The second phase, starting now, will consider dynamics of transition from civil war and civil strife to various possible forms of settlement, accommodation, reconciliation, and reconstruction – political, economic and social.

This post-doctoral fellowship will be offered to an early or mid-career researcher who wishes to conduct original empirical research of a relevant theme, aiming to produce an analytical monograph. Applications are invited from researchers whose training and work fall within either of the disciplines of comparative gender studies, policy studies, anthropology, sociology or religious studies. The purpose will be to develop analytical instruments appropriate to understanding transformations in gender regimes under situations of civic strife, and to conceive these as results of concrete transformations to be understood contextually and dynamically, rather than as the revival of impulses long submerged.
Eligibility
- Eligible applicants should have held a doctoral degree for a period of not more than five to seven years and have a demonstrable record of promise in a related area.
- The applicant is expected to have extensive experience of the region, including mastery of relevant languages.
- The applicant is expected to have a keen interest and experience in cross-disciplinary work in the social sciences.

Tasks and expectations
- The fellow is required to be in residence at CEU for the duration of the fellowship except for agreed field research trips abroad, participation in international networks, and the usual seasonal holidays. While this position is based in Budapest, the project regularly mounts several activities at CEU’s Vienna campus and elsewhere, including in the Middle East.
- The fellow is expected to participate fully in the life and the internal as well as external activities of the project.
- The fellow will be expected to provide a mid-term narrative report and a final narrative report.
- The fellow will be expected to post research results and other materials on the project website, to publish articles in significant venues, and to work on the preparation of a monograph for publication during the tenure of their fellowship.
- The fellow is expected to assist the project director actively in preparing a special international workshop entitled After Violence? Gender and Authority in the Middle East, Comparative Perspectives from the Arab World. This workshop is intended to gather scholars and experts in gender-specific theory and practice, and to result in a publication (edited volume or special journal issue).
- The fellow will be given the opportunity to play a major role in preparing the concluding international conference with participants from both the research and policy communities.
- The fellow is expected to clearly acknowledge affiliation with the project, CEU, and Carnegie Corporation of New York in contributions to publications and during participation at events in conjunction with their role in the project.

Compensation
- The fellow will be required to enter into a definite term employment contract with Central European University, will benefit from the usual research facilities in place, and will be eligible for support for field research.
