Founded in 1943 and part of Johns Hopkins University since 1950, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for more than 70 years. SAIS offers a variety of master’s and doctoral degrees and enrolls over six hundred full-time students in Washington, D.C., primarily in the school's two-year Master of Arts program. Nearly 40 percent of the students are foreign, arriving from more than 70 countries. About 200 further students attend SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy, while another 180 students attend SAIS programs at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China. About the Position:
With funding from the German Federal Foreign Office, DAAD has established at SAIS a Distinguished Visiting Professorship in honor of Helmut Schmidt. This chair is affiliated with the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs in order to commemorate the long and deep friendship between Schmidt and Kissinger. This chair represents a German initiative to create and maintain bridges between Germany and the United States, and to promote German and American cooperation in addressing global challenges.
The Helmut Schmidt Distinguished Professor (HSDP) will partner with faculty and staff within SAIS to lead a research group comprising several post-doctoral students. The HSDP will further collaborate with SAIS faculty to build a research program into the ways that transatlantic cooperation can tackle geostrategic global challenges; to devise a curriculum to educate and train future generations of world leaders; and to conduct an active program to engage U.S., European and global policy professionals in their work.
SAIS is seeking as its HSDP a distinguished scholar who has made (or has the potential to make) an important impact on our understanding of contemporary global challenges and whose research is innovative and policy-relevant. Scholars in fields consistent with Kissinger’s broad, eclectic approach to the analysis of international affairs, including (but not limited to) strategic studies and diplomatic history, are encouraged to apply. It is preferred that the scholar be well-grounded in an historical approach to the understanding of global statecraft and strategy and be able to communicate his or her work to a broad audience. Individuals with a research agenda touching on transnational issues of global concern will receive special consideration. Candidates should ideally be an EU citizen currently affiliated with a German university or research institution. Prior experience within a U.S. academic and policy environment is a plus.
The HSDP is currently funded for two further academic years (from September 1, 2020, to August 31, 2021, and again from September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022). Depending on the applicant pool and candidate availability, the search committee may either select two HSDPs (one for each of those terms) or offer the HSDP to one person with the option of a one-year renewal pursuant to successful performance of duties in the first year, such as teaching a minimum of one course during the academic year at SAIS and taking part in the academic life of the school. The preference is for a scholar at the full-professor level, but promising candidates at the associate professor level will also be considered.
