ALLGEMEINE GESCHICHTE
Marie-Cécile CHARLES, L’utilisation du fait miraculeux par les réguliers du Luxembourg du 8e au 18e siècle (2e partie) [The use of miracles by the regular clergy of Luxembourg from the 8th to the 18th century (2nd part)], S. 137-S. 151
Between the 8th and 18th centuries nearly 200 accounts of miracles, healings and other wonders were written down by monks and nuns in the territory of the former Duchy of Luxembourg.
These stories had many uses, both within and beyond the walls of the monasteries. Whereas the first section, published in Hémecht 76/1 (2024) explored the uses within the monastical communities, the second section looks at the way in which the accounts of miracles help us to understand the role that the regulars intended to play in the life of their contemporaries. The texts forge links with the outside world, aiming not only to attract people, but also to negotiate with them and guide them by influencing their representations and their identity.

L’Antiquité romaine dans l’Itinéraire de François-Xavier de Feller (1765-1780) – Europe centrale, Italie, Pays-Bas autrichiens [Between fascination and repulsion. Roman Antiquity in François-Xavier de Fellers Itinéraire - Central Europe, Italy, Austrian Netherlands], S. 152-180
The Enlightenment was characterised by a fascination with classical antiquity. The influence of Antiquity was indeed apparent in many fields. However, this observation needs to be nuanced, as can be seen in the writings of François-Xavier de Feller (1735-1802). This Luxembourg Jesuit, best known for his criticism of the Enlightenment and his support for ultramontane Catholicism, was also a traveller who toured much of Europe (Central Europe, the Italian peninsula, the Austrian Netherlands, etc.). His travel account, written from 1765 and published posthumously in 1820, contains numerous observations on classical antiquity and ancient monuments. After a brief introduction of the author and the context in which he wrote his account, this article looks first at the repulsion he felt towards pagan and « amoral » antiquity, before examining the Jesuit’s interest in several Roman monuments as evidence of an « admirable » past. Feller’s point of view on the topic is complex, sometimes ambiguous, and varies according to the regions he travelled through, as the final part of the contribution sets out to demonstrate.
Klaus MAYER, Der Nervenarzt, Autor und Regionalhistoriker Théodore Witry (1871-1947). Ein transnationaler Lebensweg im Dreieck Luxemburg-Trier-Metz [The psychiatrist, author and regional historian Théodore Witry (1871-1947). A transnational life in the cross-border region of Luxembourg-Trier-Metz], S. 181-219
This paper is the first biographical study of the Luxembourg neurologist/psychiatrist Théodore Witry, who was also known in his home country as a writer and regional historian. After graduating from Luxembourg’s Athenée, he studied chemistry in Germany before switching to medicine. In 1903, he opened his own medical practice for nervous and mental disorders, first in Trier and later in Metz, where he became a French citizen after World War I. He spent his retirement in Luxembourg, where he faced difficult years with the outbreak of WW TT. Witry pioneered as psychiatrist and psychotherapist. His reports provide a vivid picture of mental health treatment in the early 20th century and its implementation outside of an inpatient setting. What was also unusual at the time and in the Catholic-dominated Moselle-Franconian region was that he addressed the issue of homosexuality, offering psychotherapeutic help to people who suffered from their disposition. The increasing preoccupation with the entanglements of sexuality and religion, „true“ and „false“ mysticism stoked Witry’s interest in the phenomenon of stigmatization, which became his central theme in the late Metz years.
