bis 1226. Eine Neubetrachtung [The crusade participation of the Dukes of Limburg until 1226 - a new perspective], S. 389-421
Between 1096 and 1197 no member of the family of the Dukes of Limburg took part in a crusade. Walram II (†1226) broke with this ‘tradition’ in 1197 by taking part in Emperor Henry VI's crusade. The reasons the Limburgs did not participate in the previous crusades can be traced back to their need to secure their dukedom, first of the duchy of Lower Lotharingia and then the duchy of Limburg, as well as their desire to secure regional power in the area between the Rhine and the Maas. The change in the Limburgers' behaviour was made possible by the fact that, as the second-born son, Walram II, was allowed to take part in such a dangerous undertaking. On his return Walram II was able to ‘commercialise’ his expedition in Palestine, as shown, among other things, by the naming of his dominion (today Monschau) in the Eifel after the mountain Montjoie in Northern Jerusalem. The story of Walram’s deeds as fearless fighter and crusader made him one of the best-known knights at the time of the dispute over the imperial throne and ultimately recommended him for marriage to Ermesinde of Luxembourg (1214). His rise to the rank of Count of Luxembourg, based on his reputation, and the ducal dignity he gained through the early death of his elder brother, made him the leading figure of the family for generations to come. Thus, through his presence in stories and poems he finally ended up, erroneously, in a list of Richard the Lionheart's comrades-in-arms during the Third Crusade. The present article corrects this error based on an intensive scrutiny of the sources.

After the Second World War almost 5,000 German prisoners of war were held in Luxembourg to help rebuild the country, and especially to work in agriculture. Their work is largely forgotten today, which is surprising considering that the former soldiers were active in practically every commune and municipality. This influx of foreign workers, who necessitated a certain treatment due to their status of POW, represented a series of difficult challenges that the local actors had to overcome. The first part of this study examines how the Luxembourg prisoner of war system came into being and how it was structured. The focus here is on the various actors (communes, gendarmerie and employers) who had to ensure the effective deployment of labor by establishing dozens of prisoner-of-war camps and creating of a peculiar remuneration system. The second part, highlighting the limitations of this system and the release of the POWs, will be published in the next volume.
