Together with colleagues from different parts of the world, cultural historians Joris van Eijnatten, Ed Jonker, Willemijn Ruberg and Joes Segal have founded a new digital, open-access journal for the cultural history of modernity. The journal’s aim is to stimulate research and lively academic exchange, and to offer a forum for interdisciplinary scholarship in the humanities. In their mission statement, the editors conceive of modernityas the world in which we live, yet at the same time, regard modernity as a contested concept and a serious practical effort. The concepts and theories that deal with modernity are not free-floating intellectual artefacts but confront real situations and actual dilemmas. Therefore, the journal invites authors to participate in a reflexive conversation on the cultural history of modernity.

The first issue can now be found online at www.history-culture-modernity.org, and includes an opening article by the editors which provides an overview of recent debates relating to “modernity”.
