International Research Center for Cultural Studies

The International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna (IFK Internationales Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften) is a transnationally oriented research institute, founded by the Austrian government to promote interdisciplinary research and postgraduate training in the humanities and cultural studies at the highest academic levels. Its mission is to serve as an international "broker" of knowledge and ideas with the aim to facilitate transnational cooperation between the local and international community of scholars.

At present, the centers intellectual focus is directed towards following themes: Social, cultural and political pluralism, comparative cultural studies, and modes of knowledge production and innovation in the sciences and the arts.

Starting with the academic year 1997/98, IFK will implement a multi-year research program entitled "Imagined Communities: Memory, Experience, Innovation".

IFK pursues its scholarly aims by organizing international conferences, recruiting high ranking visiting fellows and awarding doctoral and post-doctoral scholarships to talented young scholars (junior fellowships). All proposals for specific conferences, conferences, fellowships and other activities are subject to international peer review. The entire scholarly program of IFK is based on recommendations of, and is controlled by its International Advisory Board chaired by Carl E. Schorske (Professor Emeritus, Princeton University).
