The Leiden University Institute for History invites applications for a University Lecturer in European Union Studies, MA International Relations (fte 1.0).

The lecturer will hold a position within the Institute for History, and participate in the research programme History and International Studies, 1900-present. We are looking to appoint a versatile lecturer who will feel at home in the multi- and inter-disciplinary environment of European Union Studies and can offer courses in multiple programmes, including MA International Relations (specialisation European Union Studies), MA European Politics and Society, European Union Studies Minor and Pre-Master programmes, as well as in the BA International Studies. As a lecturer you will be primarily responsible for research and teaching on European Union law and institutions from a socio-legal or historical perspective. We especially encourage applications from candidates with legal or socio-legal expertise. Candidates with a research and/or teaching focus on digitalisation, environmental or migration policy will be particularly well-received.
Key responsibilities
The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Teach in the MA International Relations (specialisation European Union Studies), European Union Studies Minor and Pre-Master programmes, and BA International Studies
- Contribute to teaching and supervision on the Europaeum’s MA European Politics and Society
- Be comfortable with teaching in a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary environment, and be able to cover a broad range of courses, including courses on law and institutions of the European Union, European regulatory architecture, and research methods
- Supervise BA and MA theses, and if applicable co-supervise PhD theses
- Research and publish through appropriate academic channels
- Contribute to curriculum development and programme management
- Acquire project funding at the national, European and international levels
- Participate in the research programme History and International Studies of the Institute for History
- Play an active role within the community of European studies scholars across the faculties of Leiden University
- Communicate research results beyond academia
- Perform administrative duties commensurate with career stage
Selection Criteria:
To be eligible to apply, the candidate should:
- Hold a PhD in History, International Relations/European Studies, European Law, Politics, Sociology, or another cognate discipline
- Have demonstrable knowledge of European legal and institutional developments
- Have a record of peer reviewed academic publications in relevant fields, commensurate with career stage
- Have well-developed plans for ongoing and future teaching and research
- Have a strong academic teaching record at the university level
- Have an interest in working in multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary environments and capacity for teamwork and collegiality
- Have academic administrative / management experience
Have an excellent command of English. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset; if the candidate does not speak Dutch, they are required to learn it within a period of two years (Dutch language learning is funded by the Institute for History). All courses within the MA International Relations/European Union Studies/European Politics and Society, EUS Minor and Pre-Master, and BA International Studies are currently taught in English, however Dutch is the language of instruction in most other programmes of the Institute for History, and the main language of university administration.
Upon appointment, you are required to obtain a nationally standardised teaching skills certification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO)). If you do not already possess this qualification, you must be willing to obtain this qualification within two years.
Conditions of Employment:
The appointment (fte 1.0) is initially for 18 months (August 1, 2023 to January 31, 2025), with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation. The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO). Depending on qualifications and experience, the gross monthly salary for this position may range between 3,557.00 Euro (scale 10–4) to 6,181.00 Euro (scale 12) for full-time work.
