The research project SUSPICIO “Creating Suspects. Security Politics and Colonial Rule in the Spanish Empire,” funded by the European Research Council, is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research position (f/m/d) from October 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter at the University of Granada. The position is being offered for a duration of 3.5 years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year.
Gross salary: ca. 3.300 euros/month

Projektbeschreibung
SUSPICIO geht von der Hypothese aus, dass die Sicherheit seit dem letzten Drittel des 18. Jahrhunderts zum Schlüsselkonzept der Regierungsführung im spanischen Imperium wurde. Angesichts der revolutionären Bedrohung und des Misstrauens gegenüber der eigenen Bevölkerung in Amerika ergriff die spanische Regierung Maßnahmen, um als verdächtig eingestuft Personen zu erfassen. Ausgehend von diesem Befund untersucht das Projekt, wie der Umgang mit „Verdächtigen“ einen grundlegenden Wandel der kolonialen Rechtsordnung und damit der kolonialen Herrschaft bewirkte. Chronologisch erstreckt sich das Projekt auf die Zeit von ca. 1770 bis 1820 und bezieht sich auf den gesamten hispanoamerikanischen Raum. Die Projektgruppe wird aus dem PI (Principal Investigator), einem/r Postdoc sowie drei DoktorandInnen bestehen. Angesiedelt ist das Projekt am "Departamento de Historia moderna y de América" der Universität Granada in Spanien.

Das Aufgabengebiet umfasst
- Bearbeitung des Bereichs Mexiko (Vizekönigreich Neuspanien) innerhalb des ERC-Projekts
- Selbständige Durchführung der eigenen Forschungstätigkeit und Zusammenarbeit mit den anderen Projektmitarbeitenden in Bezug auf das Gesamtprojekt
- Archivrecherche in Mexiko und Spanien
- Beteiligung an administrativen und organisatorischen Aufgaben des Projekts (u.a. Workshops)
- Mitarbeit an einer zu erstellenden Datenbank
- Bereitschaft, die Forschungsergebnisse in Form einer Monographie („zweites Buch“) und von Aufsätzen zu publizieren sowie auf internationalen Tagungen vorzustellen

Voraussetzungen sind
- Eine sehr gute Promotion in Geschichte oder einem verwandten Fachbereich
- Sehr gute Spanisch- und Englischkenntnisse
- Erfahrung in der Archivarbeit
- Internationales Forschungsprofil
- Wünschenswert sind Forschungserfahrung in der spanischen bzw. lateinamerikanischen Geschichte und/oder im Bereich der Geschichte der Sicherheit
- Aufgeschlossenheit gegenüber Methoden der Digital History
- Bereitschaft, den Wohnsitz in Granada zu nehmen

Sie können am Aufbau einer international zu besetzenden Forschungsgruppe am Departamento de Historia moderna y de América der Universität Granada mitwirken und die Forschungstätigkeit selbst aktiv mitgestalten. Sie haben zudem die Gelegenheit, ihr eigenes Forschungsprojekt innerhalb des Gesamtprojekts auszuarbeiten sowie Archivarbeit in Spanien und Mexiko durchzuführen. Das Forschungsumfeld an der Universität Granada, die Organisation von Workshops und die Teilnahme an Tagungen ermöglicht es ihnen, ihre Forschungsarbeit international zu vernetzen. Gelder für Archivreisen und Tagungsteilnahmen sind vorhanden. Mit der Stelle ist keine Lehrverpflichtung verbunden.

Postdoctoral Position ERC Project SUSPICIO (University of Granada)

The Project
SUSPICIO stems from the hypothesis that security became a key concept of governance in the late Spanish Empire (ca. 1766–1820). The perception of threat and the Spanish government’s distrust of their own population in America gave rise to extensive security regulations and measures in order to identify and judge those individuals who were perceived to be a threat to the order, i.e., who were categorized as “suspects.” The project analyzes the extent to which the treatment of “suspects” brought about a fundamental shift in the colonial legal system, and thus in colonial rule. Chronologically, the project covers the period from around 1770 to 1820, and refers to the entire Spanish America. The project group will comprise the PI (principal investigator), a postdoc and three doctoral students. The project is located in the Department of Modern History and History of America at the University of Granada in Spain.

Mission and Activities

Your part in the project will be to study the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico):
- Archival research in Mexico and Spain
- Conduct your own research agenda on New Spain and collaborate with other project members in relation to the overall project aims
- Administrative and organizational tasks of the project (including workshops)
- Collaboration in the establishment of a database
- Publish your research results in the form of a monograph (“second book”) and journal articles, and disseminate these at international conferences

Your Profile

- A high-standard doctorate in history or a related field
- Research experience in Spanish or Latin American history and/or in the field of security history is desirable
- Experience in archive research
- Very good command of both written and spoken Spanish and English
- International research profile
- Openness to digital history methods
- Readiness to take up residence in Granada

Your Benefits

You will participate in the set-up of an international research group at the Department of Modern History and History of America at the University of Granada and actively shape SUSPICIO’s research activities. You will also have the opportunity to pursue your own research agenda within the project and to conduct archival research in Spain and Mexico. The research environment at the University of Granada, the organization of workshops and participation in conferences will enable you to connect your research internationally. Funds are available for archive trips and conference participation. There is no teaching obligation associated with the position.
