The Professorship for Transregional Cultures of Knowledge at the new Department for Interdisciplinary and Multiscalar Area Studies (DIMAS) deals with the cultural and social prerequisites and functional mechanisms of idea transfers and the interweaving of epistemic systems of modernity, which are constituted in the tension between different spatial orders of knowledge.
The new research project "Transitions: Examining Changing Regimes of Sexuality in Post-Soviet Muslim Republics" is located at the professorship within the funding line "UK-German Research Projects in the Arts and Humanities." The project examines the history of the Soviet Union, the history of sexuality, and the interconnections between the new post-Soviet republics (including Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan) and external actors such as the Islamic Republic of Iran and Turkey. A position as a Research Associate (m/f/d) in part-time (20 hours per week) for the project "Transitions: Examining Changing Regimes of Sexuality in Post-Soviet Muslim Republics" is to be filled as soon as possible until February 28, 2028. An extension is sought. The remuneration is according to TV-L EG 13.
Your Tasks:
- Opportunity to develop a habilitation or equivalent achievements in the field of history, cultural studies, or gender studies
- Publication of scientific papers in professional journals and presentation at conferences and seminars
- Scientific support of the research project "Transitions: Examining Changing Regimes of Sexuality in Post-Soviet Muslim Republics," funded by the DFG and the AHRC
- Archival and field research in libraries and archives, including in Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan
- Regular participation in weekly team meetings with colleagues from Germany and the United Kingdom
Our Requirements:
- University degree (Master's, Diploma, or equivalent) and completed doctorate (alternatively: proof of submission of a doctoral project) in history, anthropology, sociology, regional studies, or gender studies
- Good written and oral communication skills in English
- Proven ability to conduct scientific work in the areas of transnational and transregional history, cultural studies, or gender studies; willingness to work interdisciplinarily
- Ability to work in a team and independently in scientific work
- Proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Russian, Persian, Turkish, Azerbaijani, or Kyrgyz
- Advantageous: experience and/or interest in video and audio production (podcasts and/or videos), experience in graphic design, management of YouTube channels, post-production, etc.
- Advantageous: Good written and oral communication skills in German
