University Lecturer in Historical Theory / General History

The lecturer will replace Prof. Herman Paul in teaching Historical Theory to research master students. In addition, he/she will teach a couple of other courses, in the English-language master program and preferably also in the Dutch-language bachelor program. Preference will be given to candidates with a broad teaching scope (ability to teach courses in political or cultural history).

Key responsibilities:
- Teaching Historical Theory in the research master program;
- Teaching additional courses (to be determined), preferably both in the English-language MA and Dutch-language BA;
- Supervision of BA and MA theses;
- Research and publishing through appropriate academic channels.

Selection criteria:
- A PhD degree in history;
- Demonstrable knowledge of, and familiarity with, the field of historical theory (philosophy of history);
- A research and publication record commensurate with career stage;
- A good academic teaching record;
- An excellent command of English and (preferably also) Dutch.

Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the lecturer is required to obtain a nationally standardized teaching skills certification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs, or BKO).

The appointment is in temporary employment, initially for one year (August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022), followed by a two-year extension (August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2024) in the case of positive evaluation. Further extensions will not be possible. The rank of lecturer corresponds roughly to that of assistant professor in North-American terms. The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 2.790,- (scale 10) to € 5.127,- (scale 11) for a full working week.

Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. Depending on qualifications, the appointee may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until he/she fully meets the requirements for scales 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. For more information, see the website.

Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity, inclusiveness and equal opportunities within its community and especially welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups.
