The Centre for History at Sciences Po (Paris) is seeking to recruit a Professor of History. The successful candidate will be a specialist in the Intellectual History and Political History of the 18th and 19th centuries. Applications are welcome that reflect the various ways of studying political models and concepts over the long term. This could involve, for example, the study of concepts and theories, their application, their impact on institutional changes, their social forms, and controversies in intellectual life. These issues can be approached through a range of methodological perspectives.
Research and teaching undertaken by the successful candidate will address the ways in which the major institutional and political changes of the 18th and 19th centuries have been elaborated, reflected upon, interpreted and realised. A specific focus on ideas and issues which have overlapped the two centuries would be welcome.
Applications may focus on European or non-European intellectual and political history. Research on a variety of regional areas will be appreciated.
The position requires a candidate possessing an international perspective and an ability to work in a collaborative manner as well as a relevant fundraising experience. The successful candidate must have a strong international reputation in terms of research, professional activities and publications and also with regard to teaching experience and language ability. In particular, he or she must have an excellent command of both French and English languages for teaching and research.
REQUIREMENTS
Research
In terms of publications, the candidate must show evidence of innovative and substantial research activity, recognized in France and at an international level. He or she will show evidence of his or her involvement within relevant European and international academic networks as well as an ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment. An ability to apply for external funding to conduct his or her research but also to support doctoral studies will be welcome. The candidate will teach at all levels and will supervise master’s and doctoral theses. He or she will join the Sciences Po Centre for History and will be able to pursue his or her research activities in the Centre’s different fields of research, in particular within Sovereignty, Government, Experiences and Humanities research clusters.
Teaching
Teaching will take place at the three levels of education Sciences Po offers, in both French and English. Undergraduate teaching will be at the Paris campus and in one of the regional branch campuses of Sciences Po. Graduate teaching will include teaching at the Sciences Po Research School, including on the Master’s Program in History, and at doctoral level.
The successful candidate will be in charge of a course on the Intellectual and Political History of the 19th century (at 1st year undergraduate level) and will participate in the 2nd year undergraduate studies program in Political Humanities at one of our seven regional branch campuses
The ability to teach general courses on issues that go beyond his or her own research interests as well as an excellent knowledge of contemporary international history issues are required.

Candidates must have the French status of “Professeur” or occupy an equivalent position in a foreign university at the time of recruitment. Candidates with the French national qualification (“Habilitation à diriger des recherches”) or with the status of “Associate Professor” or equivalent in a foreign university can also apply.
