EINSTEIN CENTER CHRONOI FELLOWSHIPS (1 – 12 months): (A-)synchronicity

Einstein Center Chronoi (EC-C) is now accepting applications for fellowships for the calendar year 2022. We welcome project proposals that fit the annual theme “(A)synchronicity”.

Einstein Center Chronoi has been founded to enable researchers from Berlin along with guests from all over the world to address issues on the topic “Time and Awareness of Time in Antiquity” in an interdisciplinary research environment. The EC-C yearly appoints fellows from the humanities, but also social, natural and life sciences, who represent a broad spectrum of academic backgrounds and qualifications. EC-C fellows, who ideally work in collaboration with a tandem partner in Berlin, are invited to work at the EC-C in Berlin to conduct innovative and interdisciplinary research on the topic of "time" and exchange ideas with other researchers at the EC-C to contribute to its research agenda.

The EC-C’s annual theme for the year 2022 will be “(A)synchronicity”.

Synchronicity has been widely used to refer to an order in time that can manifest itself in many different ways and can take on many forms. It can be a biological, cognitive, psychological, cultural, social or political process that connects events and individuals through causality and meaning. It can involve times scales ranging from a few minutes (such as as synchronized clapping in a concert hall) to years (a society’s annual calendar). Although it can occur coincidentally, such as blinking in sync, it can also be intentional, in general to establish harmony, for instance when the rhythms between different social groups are coordinated by the government. On the other hand, asynchronicity, a temporal mismatch, can be a form of resistance and resilience to this coordination of time. Asynchronicity can however also refer to multiple streams of time that do not cohere, for instance in literature, but also in the modern scholar’s reconstruction of historical periods. The Einstein Center Chronoi invited scholars who grapple with these different forms and paradigms of (a)synchronicity in the Ancient World to apply for a fellowship. Research questions could include but are not limited to:

- Whet is the reasoning behind the different processes of temporal similarities and differences?
- When is (a)synchronicity possible, imminent, or desired?
- When are synchronicity and asynchronicity considered positive/goal-enhancing or negative/goal-obstructing?
- How does synchronicity contribute to the coherence of different social systems and institutional domains?
- Is asynchronicity always disharmonizing?
- What is the practical aspect of (a)synchronicity?

Applicants are encouraged to contact a Berlin-based tandem partner from one of the partner institutions of the EC-C. This tandem partner will serve as a collaboration partner within the framework of the applicant’s proposed research at the EC-C. Fellowship applicants should further demonstrate that their projects are laid out for the time of the fellowship and that they will be able to show some (preliminary) results from their research done during their time at the EC-C. Fellowship applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree and actively contribute to the structure and development of the EC-C. Moreover, fellows will be invited to contribute to the Chronoi Bookseries Chronoi: Time, Time Awareness, Time Management published by De Gruyter.

Please note the following:
- Due to the international character of the EC-C, the form should be filled out in English;
- The duration of a fellowship can be between 1 and 12 months within the calendar year 2022. It is possible for fellowships starting in 2022 to extend into 2023 (if within the 12-month limit).

More information on conditions, rules and regulations of the fellowship is included in the application form (in particular on page 7), which can be found on our website https://www.ec-chronoi.de/apply.

Please submit your application form electronically to fellowship-applications@chronoi.org by January 15 2021.
