Call for Applications: Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies

The Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies invites applications for the German Ph.D. for the 2019 academic year.

The program combines the strengths and expertise of two leading German Studies faculties in neighboring universities: the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.

About the program:

With nineteen core faculty members, the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies is one of the largest in North American German Studies, and ensures that every chapter in German literary, cinematic and cultural history, from medieval manuscripts to contemporary cinema, is covered by experts in the field. The program thus offers an attractive combination of individual attention in small classes with a wide range of inquiry from which students can develop their own research interests. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary dialogue, with strengths in medieval studies, gender and sexuality studies, literary theory and aesthetics, romanticism and idealism, European intellectual history, modernism, realism, Yiddish and German-Jewish studies, political theory, media studies, science studies, and Afro-German and Turkish-German culture.

Funding, Course of Study, and Exchange Opportunities:

The Carolina-Duke Graduate Program covers tuition and offers a stipend for 6 years of graduate study. Students take two years of courses before embarking on their dissertation projects. After the first year, students acquire teaching experience at both a private (Duke University) and a public (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) institution. The Carolina-Duke Program collaborates with the Freie Universität, Berlin, the Humboldt Universität, Berlin, the University of Potsdam, and the University of Tübingen to provide opportunities for students to study and research abroad. Upon completion of the PhD, students receive a joint diploma from both the University of North Carolina and Duke University.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Carolina-Duke Graduate Program seeks applicants of any nationality with extraordinary academic records and intellectual curiosity. Applicants must be proficient in both German and English and have a BA or the international equivalent in German Studies or a related field.
