The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is seeking to appoint a Career Development Fellow in Contemporary History for one year from 1 September 2019. This post is based at the Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History (CSMCH). The appointee will devote most of their time to the completion of a programme of research, but will also gain experience in research-led teaching and large-scale lecturing and will organise a symposium in the area of their interests. Candidates will normally have obtained their PhD since 31 December 2017.

This is a full time (35 hours), fixed term position.

Salary: £33,199 - £39,609 per annum.

Job Purpose:
HCA Career Development Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers.
This post is designed as a career development post for a recently qualified PhD for a fixed period of 12 months. It is primarily a research post but with opportunities for developing skills in course design and organisation, large-group lecturing and research management. The post-holder will be based at the Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History, Edinburgh's leading research centre for the history of the contemporary world.

Main Responsibilities: (Approx. % of time)
- To conduct high quality research of international standard in the field of contemporary history since 1945, involving the preparation of a significant piece of research (e.g. preparing the PhD thesis for publication as a book) or body of publications (e.g. a series of related journal articles). 60%
- To organise a symposium at the end of the academic year which involves
internal and external experts in the post-holder’s area commenting on
draft publications. 10%
- To develop and teach an honours course in contemporary history since 1945, deliver a small number of lectures on a large sub-honours course, and undertake limited supervision of undergraduate or master’s dissertations. 20%
- To work closely with the nominated mentor (Dr Emile Chabal) to identify training needs and relevant career development opportunities. 5%
- To assist the Director in the management of the Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History, for example, seminar organisation, social media, blogging, podcasting etc. 5%

Planning and Organising:
The post holder will agree a general plan of research and teaching with the nominated mentor. Progress will be monitored at pre-scheduled fortnightly meetings. Excellent skills in planning and time management are required in this role to ensure the timely and efficient delivery of research outputs and high quality teaching.

Key Contacts/Relationships:
The post-holder will work closely with the Director for the Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History, Dr Emile Chabal. The Head of History will be the line manager for this post.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job:
Essential:
- A PhD completed not earlier than 31st December 2017. The panel will take into account career breaks, parental leaves, and other factors which applicants may bring to its attention.
- At least one internationally world-leading/ excellent publication(s), either published or accepted and imminently forthcoming.
- Evidence of commitment to, and potential for, excellent undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Ability to design and deliver course materials and assess student performance
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Desirable:
- A track record of high quality publications
- Evidence of ability to secure external research income
- Experience of knowledge exchange and/or engagement with public bodies and stakeholders and wider publics

- A one-page course syllabus for a proposed one-semester (11-week) Honours course, including the title of the course, a 1-paragraph introduction to the course, and an indicative list of seminar topics and/or readings. The course should be appropriate for upper-level undergraduate students at a UK university
- A sample of written work – a PhD chapter, draft article, or published piece of work – of approximately 10,000 words (if submitting a longer piece, please indicate a section of no more than 10,000 words on which readers should concentrate).

The selection procedure will involve an interview and a presentation attended by members of the School. Details of the requirements for the presentation will be included in invitations to interview.
