Entangled Religions (ER) is a peer reviewed online periodical and was established to channel research on religious contact and transfer in past and present times in a single journal. Its purpose is to provide a platform bringing together scholars of various academic specializations – ranging from philologies to the social sciences, and also bridging historical and contemporary research.

The study of Religions has been split into different fields for contingent reasons. This is a disadvantage especially with regard to topics relating to cross- and trans-religious processes, where expertise beyond single philologies or area studies is required. So far, efforts taken by newly published journals to break through these artificial boundaries towards enhanced interdisciplinarity in the study of religions were not successful. The reason is that these publications usually enjoy less prestige in the eyes of prospective authors than reputed journals in a single discipline.

Thus scholars outside of the respective subject area have difficulties becoming aware of important and path breaking articles published in specialized journals. Interdisciplinary journals usually lack the space needed to include the additional methodological explanations, definitions, and context to make important articles fully accessible to non-specialists. Entangled Religions overcomes these limitations.

The so-called world religions and other religious traditions are not, and have hardly ever been, homogeneous, nor have they formed or evolved in isolation. With the objective of overcoming cultural stereotypes and their ideological abuse, the journal Entangled Religions focuses on the crucial role of mutual encounters in the origins, development and internal differentiation of religious traditions as well as interactions with other societal fields such as politics, economics, law, arts, medicine, and social care. Articles published in this journal demonstrate that interconnected processes of self-perception and perception by others as well as phenomena of adaption and demarcation are important factors in the historical dynamics of regional religious field and an emerging global religious field, while the outer borders are being constituted through both distinctions from and relations with other societal rationalities.

Presenting research on dynamics resulting from the interaction of idealtypically conceptualized religious traditions and their manifestations in the self-imagination of these traditions, the journal Entangled Religions creates systematic reference points which allow for the integration of diachronically and synchronically compared material into a general history of religions. The studies published in ER are conducted in an interplay of theory-building and empirical studies, of object language and meta-language. ER aims at bridging academic meta-discourses on religion with religious discourses and religious self-descriptions. Thus, both scholarly theorizing disconnected from empirical data and atheoretical or naïve positivism can be avoided.

Entangled Religions complements the book series “Dynamics in the History of Religions” (DHR) published with Brill and aims at contributing to a better understanding of the interdependence of religious traditions, of processes of religious transfer as well as formally and semantically varying borders between religion and other societal fields, thus opening up innovative ways to conceptualize the history of religions.

Quality
Entangled Religions has an ISSN number to identify the electronic periodical publication. All submitted articles are peer-reviewed by two scholarly referees. One of them is a specialist in the respective subject area, the other one is outside of it.

Length
Being an online journal, Entangled Religions can accept submissions of substantial length. Submissions longer than 50.000 words may take longer to review.

Rapid Response
The editors will render a decision on all submissions usually within two months.

Copy-editing
Before publication, each article will receive first-rate, professional copy-editing by the editorial staff during one month after positive peer-reviews.

Quick Publication
Each article will be published in HTML and as a separate PDF file on the ER website as soon as the reviewing and editorial process is complete, i.e. three months after submission in case of positive peer-reviews.

ER has an open and free access, but the ER website requires registration. E-mails will be sent to lists of various professional bodies alerting them to any new publication of special interest. All registered users of the ER website will be notified whenever a new paper is posted.

Rapid Information
Entangled Religions includes an ongoing section including news on current research developments and conferences on topics regarding religious contact and transfer as well as reviews on new publications in this field.

Rights
Copyright of all articles will lie exclusively with Entangled Religions, but authors will be granted the right to reprint an article in whole or in part in any monograph or edited volume. Others must obtain written permission from Entangled Religions to reprint or electronically distribute an article.
