SIX STIPENDS AVAILABLE

"U.S. Culture and Psychology in the Nineteenth Century" (April 5 - 12, 1999)

(Martin-Luther-University, Leucorea Foundation, in Wittenberg, FRG)

Application deadline: 15 February 1999

This seminar will take a critical look at our hypothesis that the origins of a uniquely American psychology are rooted in the peculiarities of 19th-century American culture and intellectual thought. We will first investigate the broader context of American culture between 1850 and 1900, including the emerging gap between high and popular culture, and the changes in religion and science. Then, we will examine the influence of evolutionism and pragmatism in the work of important figures such as G. Stanley Hall, and William James, and discuss the role of American functionalism. The seminar will be taught by a historian and a psychologist and will likewise focus on texts from both disciplines.

The seminar is geared toward students of psychology, history, the social sciences, and American studies. The course will be conducted in English and covers the material of an entire semester (15 sessions) within the span of one week. Students are expected to prepare for the seminar in advance and will receive a reading assignment of approximately 500-700 pages one month prior to the seminar. In order to earn university credit (Schein) from Martin Luther University, participants are required to submit a research paper no later than six months after the end of the seminar. Seminar participants will be selected on a competitive basis. During the seminar, course participants are housed at the Leucorea Foundation. The stipend includes tuition and fee, meals and accommodation. Costs for travel to and from Wittenberg are the student's responsibility. A fee of DM 50.- will be charged for the seminar reader.

If you are interested in participating in this course, please submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and one letter of recommendation. The cover letter should include your fields and year of study; your university affiliation; your interest in and commitment to the seminar and the topic; your fields of study, academic advisor, related university-level courses you have taken, and other relevant experience and competencies; your proficiency in English.
