The Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow (DI) offers up to five fellowships to external researchers for a visit in Leipzig, Germany, during the academic year 2022/23. The fellowship’s duration is one to three months.

Research Fellowship Program (Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow)

The Dubnow Institute (DI) is an interdisciplinary institution dedicated to scholarly research on Jewish history and culture in Central and Eastern Europe from the Middle Ages through to the present. Its research activities adopt a pan-European perspective, including spaces of Jewish emigration, especially Israel as well as North and Latin America. The institute includes a specialist library that supports its research activities and reflects the institute’s research interests in its collections.

The call is open to junior scholars (doctoral and early postdoctoral researchers), in a smaller number to senior researchers (late postdocs, professors), working on a methodologically and thematically innovative project on Jewish history and culture. The funded research projects should be compatible with the framework of the DI’s research units »Politics« , »Law« and »Knowledge«.

Offer and Requirements:

A visiting research fellowship at the DI allows for work on individual research projects and provides for intensive exchange with colleagues on site. Visiting fellows get a work station at the institute and are invited to present their project in a guest lecture. In addition, the DI offers a broad variety of events for participation and encourages the use of its library as well as of the many libraries, archives and research centers of the University and the city of Leipzig.

Fellows are kindly asked to spend the term of their fellowship at the institute. The fellowship entails a monthly allowance of 2,000 Euro for doctoral candidates, 2,300 Euro for postdocs, and 2,800 Euro for senior researchers. Applicants from abroad must provide proof of health insurance coverage for Germany upon commencement of their stay. The DI supports visiting fellows in finding accommodation in Leipzig. Depending on the available budgetary means, fellows visiting the institute with family members requiring care may apply for a monthly maintenance grant of up to 200 Euro.

Application:

Applications can be submitted in either English or German.

They should include the following materials:

- A cover letter outlining the candidate’s motivation and the connection between their own research and the thematic focal points of the institute as well as information regarding the duration and preferred dates of the research visit (max. 2 pages)
- Description of the planned research project (max. 1,000 words)
- CV including publications (max. 5 pages)
- Transcript of the candidate’s highest academic degree
- for PhD candidates and Postdocs: contact details for two referees

Please send your application in one file (pdf format) via E-mail to fellowship(at)dubnow.de by December 15, 2021. They should be addressed to the DI’s director.
