Das Heft 2/2018 der Hémecht, der Zeitschrift für transnationale Luxemburger Geschichte, bietet Einblicke in einen neu entdeckten Fundus: Timothy Salemme und Jean-Daniel Mougeot haben im Arloner Staatsarchiv ein Dutzend bisher unbekannte Urkunden aus dem Dominikanerinnenpriorat Marienthal im Herzogtum Luxemburg aufgestöbert. Ihre kritische Edition vervollständigt das Kartular Nikolaus’ Van Wervekes von 1885 und erläuterts die komplexe Archivgeschichte des Klosters. Georges Hellinghausen zeichnet aufgrund römischer Quellen die Geschichte des Schulstreits nach, der im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert das Verhältnis von Staat und Kirche in Luxemburg nachhaltig belastet hat. Im hier veröffentlichten dritten Teil geht es um den Höhepunkt der Krise, der unter Bischof Koppes (1883-1918) mit dem Schulgesetz von 1912 erreicht wurde: eine Revanche des antiklerikalen Blocks für das prokatholische Gesetz von 1897/98. Der Beitrag beleuchtet eine entscheidende Etappe in der allgemeinen politischen Geschichte Luxemburgs. Das Heft enthält zudem den zweiten Teil der ethnographischen und historischen Arbeit von Wolfgang Müller (1956) über den Kult des hl. Donatus in der Diözese Trier und insbesondere im Saarland. Zwei Forschungsberichte betreffen die portugiesische Einwanderung nach Luxemburg. Thierry Hinger hat sich in seiner Promotionsarbeit mit der Auswanderungspolitik des portugiesischen Staates von den 1950er Jahren bis 1997, also zur Zeit des Salazar-Regimes und in den ersten Jahren nach der Nelkenrevolution, und mit ihren Auswirkungen und Reaktionen in der portugiesischen Gemeinschaft im Großherzogtum beschäftigt und betont dabei die Rolle der Migrantenvereine. Joana De Almeida hat in ihrer Masterarbeit die häufig illegale Einwanderung von Portugiesen in den `60er und `70er Jahren untersucht. Das Heft schließt mit vier Buchbesprechungen.

From its foundation in the 1230s onward, the Dominican priory of Marienthal has played an important role in the county, later duchy of Luxembourg, as documented by its rich monastic archives. This paper aims at pursuing the critical editorial work carried out at the end of 19th century by Nicolas Van Werveke by publishing 12 unedited charters dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, which are today preserved in the archival fonds Marienthal, prieuré des Dominicaines. 1268–1793, at the State Archives in Arlon, Belgium. The critical edition is introduced by a short analysis of the dispersion of the monastic archives since the dissolution of the monastery in 1783, and the creation of this archival fonds in Arlon during the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1898, a majority of Catholic MPs obtained a modification of the 1881 School Act in favour of the Catholic Church: priests were integrated in the commissions in charge of nominating teachers and the latter had to make children recite the catechism at school. However, in the early 20th century, a “block” of Liberals and Socialists with clear leanings towards secularization constituted itself in parliament. It introduced a new school act despite the protestations of Bishop Koppes and the Vatican. The Holy See sought, notably with the help of its nunciature in Brussels, to change the bill through a press campaign in the Osservatore Romano, various actions seeking to influence the government and grand-ducal court and an official stance taken by Pope Pius X. When the law that ended the involvement of teachers in religious education, was finally voted in 1912, Koppes refused to apply it, but removed religious education from public schools altogether. A school war broke out and divided Luxembourgish society. It also affected diplomatic relations between Rome and the Grand-Duchy, which were interrupted until 1917.
