Religious Responses to Natural Hazards in Comparative Perspective

Conference of the European Society for Environmental History on the theme "Climate Histories"

This panel session explores the diverse responses of religious communities to natural disasters from a comparative historical perspective. The presentations examine how believers of various religious traditions have reacted to events such as earthquakes, avalanches, floods, storms and droughts. Both, theological interpretations and practical responses developed in the face of such catastrophes, are considered. Attention will also be given to the role of religious institutions. They have significantly shaped the range of religious responses to natural hazards by setting the framework for how believers interpret and react to such events, providing official doctrines and guidelines which have also affected social expectations. In addition, we will examine practices rooted in popular piety, which may differ from or complement institutional guidelines. These practices often reflect the lived experiences and immediate needs of believers, incorporating local traditions, folk beliefs, and spontaneous acts of devotion. By analysing case studies from different eras and regions, this session examines how religions have not only provided comfort and explanations but have also contributed to the resilience and adaptability of communities. Through this comparative analysis, we seek to highlight both the commonalities and distinct approaches that religions offer in the face of environmental challenges, contributing to a deeper understanding of the interplay between faith and disaster response.
