April erbeten an forum@herder-institut.de.

The supply situation in Eastern Europe in the 20th century changed rapidly as a result of war and civil war, as well as structural and socio-economic changes, and not least by the socialist economic planning. Supply shortfalls became a major problem of coping with everyday life and were often the trigger for demonstrations and riots, which in turn put political systems under serious pressure. Supply issues and thus the safeguarding of everyday life have therefore become not only individual threats, but as a matter of risk to the entire state. At the same time, those affected developed very different strategies to deal with these supply problems.
The conference would like to pursue this interplay of supply problems and solution strategies and practices, both at individual and collective as well as on state level. Not more than 15 young researchers (PhD students, early postdocs and graduate master students/master students nearing the end of study) dealing with supply problems in a broader sense (e.g. basic supply, heating material, water, medicine, means of communication) will be invited. We welcome not only projects on Polish and German history, but also on other countries of Eastern Europe, which allow specificities and general problems to be worked out.
The travel and accommodation costs are paid by the organizers if you don't have any fonds for travelling. Conference languages are German and English. Please send your electronic applications (short CV and an abstract of max. 500 words) to the following address by April 30th: forum@herder-institut.de.
