Gender and Sexuality in the Global Sixties
The 1960s are often remembered as an era of progressive global liberation when a myriad of social movements gained momentum, when armed revolutionaries toppled governments, and when young people braved fierce opposition in their attempts to push the world towards freedom and equality. We want to draw back this nostalgic curtain to re-examine this crucial decade. Who were the global social actors of the long 1960s? How did they re-imagine society and what actions did they take to either provoke—or resist—change? What were some of the (unexpected) alliances among individuals and groups that emerged in the process? What kinds of conflicts existed, arose, were resolved, or persisted? And how can we trace key points of reference between individuals and groups as they challenged (or upheld) political structures, gender systems, and models of sexual desire?

Arguing that the 1960s are still too easily conflated with explicitly countercultural movements, and too often celebrated as a period of emancipatory sexual and other “revolutions,” we seek papers that expand the more “familiar” frames of reference – for example by stretching back from 1968 to the early 1960s, or by looking beyond the student protests that most visibly interrupted life in such capitals as Paris and Mexico City, to investigate the broader socio-political landscape of the period. We encourage contributions that both acknowledge and complicate the centrality of gender and sexuality in the making of cultural and political ideologies - and that re-address questions of beginnings and endings, continuity and change, as well as the relations between local understandings and global paradigms of the long sixties.

* Please send all paper submissions to Jadwiga Pieper Mooney, Associate Professor of Latin American History at the University of Arizona, (jadwiga@email.arizona.edu) and Tamara Chaplin, Associate Professor of Modern European History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (tchaplin@illinois.edu). The deadline for paper submissions is February 1, 2015.

*Please note that this CFPs precedes an upcoming Call for Contributions to an edited volume on the Global Sixties, to be published by Routledge Press. Please indicate if you would like to be considered as a contributor, and if you could submit a book chapter related to the theme of your conference paper by November 2015.
