The New Generation Group (NGG) of the Jewish Historical Society of England is excited to announce the call for papers for its second annual conference. The 2025 conference "Archives, Heritage and Memory" will centre around archives, places, and books as a space of memory. The NGG is an international group of emerging scholars connected by a wide-ranging interest in Jewish studies.

Archives, Heritage and Memory

The 2025 annual conference of the New Generation Group will centre around archives, places, and books as a space of memory. As an accumulation of traces, the archive is meant to support memory. However, archiving is inseparable from selection, exclusion, forgetting, and destruction. To the philosopher Jacques Derrida, the drive to archive includes not only the act of preserving memory but also the desire to control and interpret these traces.

The conference aims to offer space for postgraduate and early career researchers to engage critically on emerging trends and new perspectives in Jewish studies. The NGG conference spans academic fields and encourages submission examining different spaces and periods, from Biblical times to the modern day.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

- Material objects (books, heirlooms, etc.)
- Family archives
- Virtual and immaterial
- Limitations of the archives
- Counter-archives
- Conservations practices,
- Curating practices

We are pleased to invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to submit proposals (250 words) with a short biography (100 words). Abstracts should be sent to c.j.e.guigui@qmul.ac.uk and lisa.jenkel@unibas.ch

Submissions should be received by 18:00pm (GMT) on the 15th of January.

The conference is organised with the generous contribution of the Jewish Historical Society of England and in cooperation with the Parkes Institute at the University of Southampton. Lunch and tea will be provided. Funding for travel costs will not be available.
