Modernization Strategies in Central Europe in Contemporary Times

The IRHiS Laboratory of the Graduate School of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Lille is launching a call for applications for a 3-year doctoral contract, focusing on the modernization strategies in Central Europe in contemporary times.
The PhD thesis should relate to an aspect of the modernization process that the countries of Central Europe (today Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) have known since the 19th century. This process is understood both in its political (construction of political communities and the place of the individual and groups within these communities) and economic dimension (economic development, industrialization, transfers of property, etc.). It is expected that the PhD thesis will analyze discourses and/or practices of this process. A comparative approach is also welcome, especially between Central European and Western models, as is the study of forms of opposition or revolt against the Western modernization model and the analysis of alternative ideologies to this modernity (agrarian, communist, fascist / nazi or illiberal model).
The PhD thesis will be supervised by Thomas Serrier (Professor, University of Lille, Faculty of Foreign Literatures, Languages and Civilizations, IRHiS) and co-supervised by Roman Krakovsky (Chair of Excellence at the University of Lille / Global Studies Institute of the University of Geneva)
