The war in Ukraine has far-reaching geopolitical, humanitarian and socio-cultural consequences – for Ukraine but also for neighbouring countries, other European states and the European Union. The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) invites to four round tables which will explore what migration and border studies can contribute to understanding war and its consequences.

The event is organized by the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION in cooperation with the Regional Office of the Southeast Europe Society at Viadrina, the Center for East European and International Studies ZOiS and the University of Bologna and is aimed at the general public. September 2022, at European University.

The war in Ukraine has far-reaching geopolitical, humanitarian and socio-cultural consequences - not only for Ukraine itself, but also for neighbouring countries, other European states and the European Union itself. In this public event, we will ask what migration and border studies can contribute to understanding the war and its consequences, and how they should be designed to address the new social challenges, especially with regard to migration processes. The event includes contributions from scholars and civil society activists from Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Serbia, and Ukraine.

The event is a multiplier event of the GlocalEast project and will take place as part of the GLocalEAst Summer School “Global Migration, Diaspora and Border Studies in East-Central Europe” at the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION, European University Viadrina, (September 5–16, 2022). It is addressed to the academic public as well as to interested citizens, and can be followed on site (Logensaal, European University of Viadrina) as well as online. PD Dr. Carolin Leutloff-Grandits, Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION, EUV

Panel 1: Ethnicity and Politics of Identity

Moderator: Prof. Dr. Kira Kosnick (Director of the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION, EUV)

Speakers:

- Prof. Dr. Claudia Weber, EUV: War, ethnicity and politics of identity in Ukraine: a historical perspective
- Dr. Marco Puleri, University of Bologna: Identity dynamics and the making of new/old 'language borders’ in Ukraine': insights into internal political and intellectual debates

Panel 2: B/Orders in Motion (Round Table)

Abstract:
State borders symbolize state sovereignty and mark a territorially constituted social order. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine is not only a violation of state sovereignty, but also an attack on the social order. To what extent have the social orders in the different regions of Ukraine changed as a result of the war of aggression, which boundaries have been contested and abolished, and what new boundaries and dis/orders have emerged? How and by whom are these marked and maintained, and what are the consequences for different parts of the population? How can one live in devastated landscapes? In addition to the disputed state border, we will therefore also look at the consequences of the war for the social order in Ukraine and the significance of (new) social and cultural demarcations and their effects on the social constitution.

Moderator: PD Dr. Carolin Leutloff-Grandits, EUV

Speakers:

- Dr. Sabine von Löwis, ZOiS
- Kateryna Mishchenko, Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin (online)
- Dr. Olga Konsevych, Berlin Social Science Center (WZB)

Panel 3: Global Migration, Diaspora and Migrant Integration (Round Table)

Abstract:
The war in Ukraine caused the flight of millions of people – either internally or to neighbouring countries and other European states, among them in the European Union, where they were supported by state institutions and civil society and often received access to the labour market. Many found also shelter with or support of relatives and acquaintances who had been on labour migration abroad. In this panel, we want to look at the situation of migrants and migrant integration by considering the impact of gender, family, class and education, civil society and state policies.

Moderator: Dr. Marco Puleri, University of Bologna

Speakers:

- Dr. Viktoriya Sereda, Forum for Transregional Studies Berlin
- Dr. Irina Mützelburg, ZOiS
- Dr. Oksana Dutschak, Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM)

Panel 4: Geopolitics of Shifting B/Orders and Migration (Round Table)

Abstract:
This panel aims at exploring interconnections between space, bordering processes and migration. Classical concepts rooted in geopolitical thinking will be (re)applied to explore spatial understanding(s) of international relations, changing global order and their consequences for human flows. Multilevel perspective, including southern and eastern outskirts of Europe as well as the EU will be employed.

Moderator: Prof. Dr. Jarosław Jańczak, EUV

Speakers:

- Dr. Mykhailo Minakov, Kennan Institute, Wilson Center for International Scholars
- Prof. Dr. Laszlo Andor, currently EUV and former EU commissioner (online)
- Prof. Dr. Dejan Djokic, Goldsmiths, University of London, currently Humboldt University Berlin
