This seminar is going to be a discussion based on Martin Schulze Wessel’s recent book “The Curse of the Empire. Ukraine, Poland, and the Aberration in Russian History” (Original German title: “Der Fluch des Imperiums. Die Ukraine, Polen und der Irrweg in der russischen Geschichte”). Besides the Russian-Polish-Ukrainian imperial entanglements since the 18th century, another point of discussion will be what role Germany/Prussia has played in it and what it implies for today’s German-Ukrainian relations.
The speakers will be:
Martin Schulze Wessel, Ludwig Maximilian University (Munich, Germany)
Polina Barvinska, Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) (Regensburg, Germany)
Frank Sysyn, University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada)
The panel will be chaired by Guido Hausmann, University of Regensburg (Germany). At the end of the webinar, there will be a Q&A section where questions from the audience will be read out. The seminar is held in English with simultaneous translation into Ukrainian.
