Applications are invited for a workshop for PhD-students in European-Jewish History and Culture at the Centre for German-Jewish Studies (CGJS) at the University of Sussex (http://www.sussex.ac.uk/cgjs/) from 30 March to 3 April 2009. The purpose of the workshop that starts this year and will take place in the coming years as well is to create an interdisciplinary network of younger scholars engaged in any area of European-Jewish history, thought, literature and culture from the Middle Ages to the present. Participants will be given the opportunity to present and discuss their projects in an interdisciplinary atmosphere and discuss recent historical and methodological trends with leading scholars in the field.

Invited speakers in 2009 will be, among others, Dr. David Rechter (Oxford), Prof. Mitchell B. Hart (University of Florida) and Dr. Francesca Bregoli (Philadelphia/Oxford). The workshop starts with an evening event at the Jewish Policy Institute in London and continues at the University of Sussex, Brighton.

Travel expenses, accommodation and meals will be paid for by the CGJS. Students from Central and Eastern Europe are especially encouraged to apply; individual candidates from Israel and the United States will be considered as well.
