The relation between norms, institutions and economic development has emerged as an important research field for both historians and economists. The workshop tackles this issue with regard to the increasing regulation of Mediterranean trade in the age of mercantilism and from the perspective of those widespread illegal practices performed by social actors who aimed to bypass it.

This workshop is organised by the research network "Aux bords des institutions: pouvoirs, acteurs et pratiques marchandes dans l'Europe méditerranéenne (XVIIe-XIXe siècle)", supported by the University of Bari, the Ecole française de Rome, the University of Basel and the Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences de l'Homme (Aix-en-Provence).
