International Network for the Study of War and Religion in the Modern World

This two-day conference seeks to explore the role of religion, broadly understood, in the experience and interpretation of war from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Abstracts are welcomed from scholars working in any field of study related to this overarching theme, including the rhetoric and activity of the clergy, Christian and otherwise, in societies at war, the impact of war on the religious outlook of those who experience it at first hand, either as combatants or civilians, religious iconography in wartime, and the place of religion in the memory of war and in the memorialisation and commemoration of the war dead.

The conference will be hosted by the staff of the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre and convened by Michael Snape (University of Birmingham) and Edward Madigan (Commonwealth War Graves Commission). 400 word abstracts should be forwarded, along with a one-page CV, to m.f.snape@bham.ac.uk or edward.madigan@cwgc.org by April 12 2013.

The International Network for the Study of War and Religion in the Modern World was established in 2009 to promote greater communication and collaboration among scholars working in the field of war and religion from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. AFCC, Amport House, is a constituent College of the Defence Academy, delivering and fostering research, education and training, and is the home of Faith across Defence.
