The Melammu Project and Symposium 9
The Melammu Project investigates the continuity, transformation and diffusion of Mesopotamian and Ancient Near Eastern culture from the third millennium BCE through the ancient world until Islamic times. It organizes regular symposium on aspects related to this general subject, the next of which, Melammu Symposium 9, will take place in Helsinki and Tartu in May 2015. For more information, please see http://www.aakkl.helsinki.fi/melammu/. For more information on Melammu Symposium 9 “Conceptualizing Past, Present and Future”, please see http://www.aakkl.helsinki.fi/melammu/symposia/sypr09prog.php. Please note that the conference language is English only.

The Poster Session
We herewith invite proposals for posters by PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for Melammu Symposium 9. In accordance with the scope of the Melammu Project, we invite researchers from all possibly relevant disciplines (not just Assyriologists!), including history, Archaeology, Assyriology, Egyptology, Classics, Biblical studies, philosophy, and Islamic studies, etc.

Poster presentations will be divided into three groups, 1) Tuesday 19th May in Helsinki, 2) Friday 22nd May in Tartu, and 3) Saturday 23rd May in Tartu. On each day after the lunch time, there will be an “Introduction to Poster Session” consisting of a quick succession of talks by poster presenters. You will have 2 minutes to introduce yourself, your research and poster. You can use one poster slide for this introduction. Each “Poster Session” will take place after this introduction and at the end of the afternoon. Posters will be displayed on boards. There are no poster printing facilities in Helsinki and Tartu, so you will have to print the poster at your home institution and bring it with you.

Important Dates
Please send your poster title and abstract of max. 300 words and your preferred place (Helsinki or Tartu) to saana.svard@helsinki.fi or sanae.ito@helsinki.fi by 15 November 2014. Results will be announced by 15 December 2014. Please send your poster slide to saana.svard@helsinki.fi or sanae.ito@helsinki.fi by 15th April 2015.

Costs
Although the conference organizers are looking into possibilities to help out with accommodation and travel costs, at this stage it is probably best to assume that participants will have to find funding for most of the costs by themselves.
