In recent times imperial and national politics have made a strong return to the global scene. This meant a severe setback for postmodern hopes for a transnational and post-imperial world or a global conflict management. The Department of History and the Department of Medieval Studies at Central European University, Budapest, take this as an occasion to rethink the role of empires and nations in history.

We invite paper proposals from undergraduate students from all around the world, who are interested in any aspect of nation and empire from a historical perspective. We will consider proposals from all thematic areas (political history, social history, economic history, military history, cultural history, gender history, religious history, intellectual history, etc.) and all historical periods. However, preference will be given to proposals with interesting approaches and well defined research questions, objectives, and findings.
