The German Historical Institute in Washington (GHI) is organizing a number of panels on the topic of knowledge and migration for the 2016 Annual Conference of the German Studies Association, to be held on September 29-October 2, 2016, in San Diego, California. We invite proposals for individual papers or for complete panels addressing the intersection of the history of knowledge and the history of migration in any time period. We are particularly interested in the question how knowledge was produced, shared, and transformed in connection with migration.
Possible topics are:

- religious knowledge in processes of migration and integration
- education and strategies of acquiring cultural capital in processes of migration
- migrants’ media; migrants as producers, distributors, and translators of new knowledge and/or as preservers of traditional social and cultural knowledge
- the migration of theoretical and applied knowledge: scientists and scholars, artisans and craftsmen as migrants – knowledge between transfer, modification, and adaption
- organizing knowledge: migrant strategies and knowledge in institutions, associations and networks
- knowledge transfer in connection with forced migration: carriers and orders of knowledge in contexts of exile and emigration
- children and adolescents as carriers, translators, and producers of new knowledge in processes of migration and integration

Please send a brief CV and a proposal of no more than 300 words by January 15, 2016, to Susanne Fabricius (fabricius@ghi-dc.org). Panel proposals should include 3-4 papers, moderator, commentator (if necessary, we can help find moderators and commentators).

The panels will be organized and coordinated by Simone Lässig/GHI Washington and Swen Steinberg/UCLA. The GHI will provide lump sum travel grants to successful applicants from Europe and North America.
