Die Epoche zwischen der Französischen Revolution 1789 und der Wiederherstellung der »guten alten Ordnung« nach dem Scheitern der demokratischen Revolution in Deutschland 1848 bewegte Zeitgenossen sowie Künstler und Literaten späterer Jahre.
Das zeigt sich in den Werken revolutionärer Autoren wie Georg Forster und Georg Büchner. Während Heinrich Heine im revolutionären Paris an der deutschen Gegenwart verzagte, entwickelten Schiller und Goethe sich vom Sturm und Drang zum höfischen Establishment. In der Romantik fand sich die Verklärung der Vergangenheit ebenso wie düstere Brechungen der damaligen Gegenwart (E.T.A. Hoffmann). Ähnliche Entwicklungen traten auch in anderen europäischen Ländern auf (Percy & Mary Shelley).
Werke und Biografien dieser Künstler wurden oft von Filmschaffenden aufgegriffen, um ihre Realität unter den unterschiedlichsten Regimen zu behandeln. Die »Klassische Literatur« diente ihnen dabei auch als Verkleidung, um akute gesellschaftliche Probleme darzustellen. So spiegeln die Filme häufig die Zerrissenheit zwischen Kultur und Politik.
cinefest und Kongress reflektieren damit in doppelter Brechung die filmischen Bearbeitungen künstlerischer und literarischer Werke einer politisch bewegten Zeit.
Teil des Festivals ist der 30. Internationale Filmhistorische Kongress, bei dem die Themen des Festivals in Vorträgen und Diskussionen vertieft werden.
Mögliche Themenkomplexe beim Kongress:
- Vergleich von Verfilmungen einer literarischen Vorlage in verschiedenen Epochen/politischen Gesellschaften / Spiegelung der Gegenwart in der (Literatur)Geschichte
- Ausweichen auf klassische Texte, um aktuelle (politische) Probleme zu thematisieren (z.B. DEFA-Film nach 1965)
- Sprache & Literatur als Medium nationaler Bewegungen
- Analyse von doppelten Brüchen: historisch und bei den Verfilmungen (Bsp.: »Nathan der Weise«, der Stoff ist aus 12. Jh., das Stück bezieht sich auf 19. Jh., Verfilmungen auf das 20. Jh.)
- Zentraleuropäische Adaptationen (Österreich, Frankreich, England, Tschechoslowakei, Italien, etc.)
- Revolution 1848 als europäisches Phänomen / nationale Künstler und deren Werk-Adaptationen
Der Fokus soll dabei auf Künstler und Literatur aus der Zeit liegen und nicht auf Werken, die später die historischen Ereignisse abbilden und reflektieren. Dabei soll der Ansatz nicht biografisch sein (keine Vorträge über die Lebensläufe der Künstler oder Filmmacher). Reine Historiendramen, Theaterinszenierungen sowie Verfilmungen über das Leben politischer Personen (Napoleon, Königin Luise, etc.) werden nicht behandelt.
Die Vorträge sind auf ca. 20 Minuten angesetzt, mit anschließender Diskussion.
Die Konferenzsprache ist Deutsch oder Englisch (es gibt keine Live-Übersetzung).
Referenten erhalten den Festival-Katalog sowie eine Kongressakkreditierung, die auch zum Besuch der Kinoveranstaltungen vom 22.-26.11. berechtigt.
Auswärtige Referenten können in der Regel mit einem Reisekostenzuschuss unterstützt werden.
Im Anschluss an den Kongress sollen die überarbeiteten Vorträge in einem Buch veröffentlicht werden (Abgabetermin der Texte 31.12.2017), das im Herbst 2018 erscheint.
Gerne können Vorschläge für Vorträge in Form eines Abstracts (ca. 1500 Zeichen) und einer Kurzbiografie bis zum 1. Juni 2017 an kongress@cinegraph.de geschickt werden.

Revolution, Restoration, and Transition
A Cinematic Reflection of Culture and Politics between 1789 and 1848
The era between the French Revolution of 1789 and the restoration of the royal order after the failure of the democratic revolution in Germany in 1848 has motivated and inspired both contemporary artists and literary figures between the late 18th century and the present.
The dynamics of this era are evident in the works of revolutionary writers such as Georg Forster and Georg Büchner. Living in Paris during the revolution, Heinrich Heine was disheartened by the situation in Germany while Schiller and Goethe transitioned from the “Sturm und Drang“ to a courtly aristocracy. During the Romantic era, both transfigurations of the past and sombre reflections of the present (E.T.A. Hoffmann) were found and similar developments also occurred in other European countries (Percy & Mary Shelley).
Filmmakers of the 20th century have used both the works and biographies of these authors as a blueprint to cope with their own realities under diverse regimes, discussing and assessing acute social problems under the disguise of "classical literature". These films actively expose an ever-present inner turmoil between culture and politics.
cinefest and the film conference are therefore able to offer a two-fold refraction of cinematic adaptations of artistic and literary works from a period of political unrest.
The 30th International Conference of German Film Heritage is an integral part of the festival, where the topics of the festival will be deepened in presentations and discussions.
Possible Topics for the conference are:
- Comparison of film versions of a literary work in different epochs / political societies / a reflection of (literary) history in present societies and cultural contexts
- Use of classic texts to address current (political) issues (e.g. DEFA film after 1965)
- Language & Literature as a vehicle / medium for national movements
- Analysis of dual perspectives: the historical perspective as well as the time frame of the film adaptations (Example: “Nathan der Weise”: subject is from 12th century, the play was written in the 19th century, film adaptations in the 20th century)
- Central European Adaptations (Austria, France, England, Czechoslovakia, Italy, etc.)
- Revolution 1848 as a European phenomenon / artists of different nationalities and adaptations of their work
The focus will be on artists and literature from the time and not on works which later depict and reflect the historical events. The approach should not be biographical (no lectures on the biographies of the artists or filmmakers). The conference will not deal with historical films or theatrical productions nor will it deal with films about the life of political persons (Napoleon, Queen Luise, etc.).
The presentations are limited to ca. 20 minutes, followed by a discussion. Conference languages are German or English.
Presenters will receive the festival catalogue as well as a free accreditation to the conference, which also entitles them to attend festival film screenings from 23-26 November.
Out-of-down presenters will usually be supported with a travel fund.
Following the conference, the presentation will be published in a book (deadline for the articles: 31 December 2017; Release date: Fall 2018).
