(Wo)men of power, biographies and the African post-colonial state

In 2015, the South African comedian Trevor Noah compared the then presidential candidate Donald Trump to the stereotypical picture of African presidents: narcissistic characters uttering irrational statements and exhibiting autocratic tendencies. The video was watched by 4,9 million viewers on Youtube, a success that shows the persisting appetite for such cartoonish representations of African leaders who seem to exist as an almost a-historical allegory.

One of the reasons such characterizations continue to exist is the lack of sufficient historical assessment of the complex political, social, and economic context of presidential power. The formation of the post-colonial African state has been told from a highly theoretical perspective. The concepts of “personal rule” and “big man” overshadowed the complex roles of individual political actors while exclusively focusing on male power and leaving the political life stories under-developed.

Renewed academic interest has only recently refreshed the use of biography writing in African history. While political biography can enable us to reflect on why, at a particular time, a particular individual became the “sole speaker”, not only of an whole generation but of an entire political system, it should also explore the lives of those whose alternative political projects were aborted, failed or, perhaps, forgotten.

This call for publication invites a reflection on the uses of political biography to foster new perspectives on the history of the postcolonial African state. We welcome proposals dealing with the political lives of those who were officially in office as well as contributions focusing on political personalities vying for power without official positions, especially women, or focusing on social groups to exemplify new biographical narrative of resistance.

Researchers from various fields (history, political science, literature…) are invited to send proposals relating to one or several of the following themes:

- Political biographies and African history: theory, concepts and methodology
- Political biographies of men/women who vied for power, hold office and/or defended alternative visions of state formation / state management.
- The use of political biography to re- or deconstruct the myth of the “father of the nation”
- The independence negotiations viewed through life-writing/biographies
- Biographies of influential women during and after the decolonisation process
- Prosopography / biographies of social groups during and after the decolonisation process

The publication will be submitted to an international publishing house. If interested, please send an abstract in English or French (200-300 words) and a short C.V. (2 pages max.) to Anaïs Angelo, anais.angelo@univie.ac.at, by 31 August 2018.

Femmes et hommes de pouvoir : l’état postcolonial en Afrique vu à travers la biographie

En 2015, l’humoriste sud-africain Trevor Noah comparait Donald Trump, alors candidat à l’élection présidentielle, à un président africain stéréotypé : un personnage narcissique aux déclarations irrationnelles et aux tendances autocratiques. La vidéo fut visionnée par près de 4,9 million de spectateurs sur Youtube. Ce succès démontre non seulement l’appétence pour les représentations caricaturales des leaders africains mais aussi l’efficacité de ces représentations qui fonctionnent comme des allégories intemporelles. En effet, la formation de l’état post-colonial africain a été dominée par des analyses théoriques où les concepts de « big man » ou de « personnalisation du pouvoir » ont éclipsé l’importance des récits biographiques quant à l’historicisation de la formation d l’Etat.

Ce n’est que récemment que l’intérêt pour le genre biographique en histoire politique africaine a resurgit. La biographie politique permet de demander pourquoi, à un moment donné, un individu est devenu l’unique porte-parole non seulement d’une génération mais de tout un système politique. Plus encore, elle permet d’explorer les vies de ceux dont les projets politiques n’ont pas abouti, ont échoué, ou ont été oubliés.

Cet appel à contributions invite à réfléchir sur les usages de la biographie politique pour générer de nouvelles perspectives historiques sur la formation et la gestion de l’état post colonial africain. L’appel ne se limite pas aux acteurs politiques qui ont occupé une poste officiel. Au contraire, les récits biographies d’acteurs qui ont consacré leur vie à la lutte ou militantisme politique sans pour autant avoir nécessairement occupé une fonction officielle. L’ouvrage a également pour but de porter une attention toute particulière aux récits biographiques alternatifs ou résistants consacrés à des femmes politiques et/ou groupes sociaux militants.

Les contributions peuvent être multidisciplinaires (et sont ainsi ouvertes aux champs de l’histoire, la science politique ou encore de la littérature…). Elles pourront porter sur un ou plusieurs des thèmes suivants :

- Biographie politique et histoire politique africaine : théorie, concepts et méthodologie
- Biographie politiques d’hommes et/ou femmes qui ont occupé ou cherché à occuper une fonction politique officielle ; qui ont défendu une vision alternative de la formation / gestion de l’Etat
- Les usages de la biographie pour dé- ou reconstruire la fabrique du mythe du « père de la nation »
- Les négociations pour l’indépendance vues à travers le récit biographique
- Biographies de femmes politiques pendant et après le processus de décolonisation
- Prosopographie et biographies de groupes sociaux engagés dans le processus de formation /gestion de l’Etat

L’ouvrage sera proposé d’une maison d’édition internationale. Si intéressé, merci de faire parvenir un résumé de 200 à 300 mots, en anglais ou en Français, et un court C.V. (2 pages max.) à Anaïs Angelo, anais.angelo@univie.ac.at, avant le 31 Août 2018 inclus.
