2. International Memorial Archives Tutorial
February 6-8, 2019
About “Memorial Archives”
“Memorial Archives” are the digital archives of the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial and many other institutions focusing on Nazi era victim data. It is a worldwide accessible virtual reading room. For cooperating institutions it is even more: it is a platform and a learning database to administrate and to edit one’s own data and files; to create clusters of common datasets of victims, locations and sources; and to reconstruct transports and fates.
“Memorial Archives” is located on a server cluster in Germany. It is powered by the AGE’s knowledge of smart IT technologies, based on MongoDB, a document oriented open source NoSQL database, the graph database Neo4j and the Solr full text search engine. It comes completely without any licenses or costs for the users and offers high performance and unlimited extension. Recent improvements are the results of last year’s Think Tank “geodata” and the ongoing transports project.
The network is based on the project “Digitization of the Card File Index of the SS-Wirtschafts-Verwaltungshauptamt” (WVHA card file). From 2003-2009 more than 30 institutions participated in contributing names related to these cards. This card file with its reconstructed names is one of the most important parts of the “Memorial Archives”.
A tutorial for cooperation partners
Growing steadily since 2013, the “Memorial Archives” are hosting an increasing number of databases from cooperating institutions but also from private collections. The tutorial focuses on staff members of institutions as well as collection holding private initiatives which already work with or are interested in searching, editing and linking data in the existing network.
From February 6-8, 2019 the Flossenbürg Memorial offers a three-day mixture of lectures and exercises on how to work with the “Memorial Archives”. The venue is located at the Education Center of the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial. The official program starts at 1.00 pm on Wednesday and ends at 1.00 pm on Friday.
The Flossenbürg Memorial will not charge any conference fee. There will be a free shuttle service between Weiden and Flossenbürg and free catering during the tutorial. Rooms are reserved in hotels in the city of Weiden/Opf.; however travelling and accommodation costs will not be provided by the Flossenbürg Memorial.
The number of participants is limited. We will inform you about the status of your application after December 9, 2018.
