The Centre for Privacy Studies is now inviting proposals for the edited volume “Privacy at Sea: Practices, Spaces, and Communication in Maritime History”. This volume will focus on the different dimensions of privacy in the context of maritime history, with an emphasis on the period between 1400 and 1800. We welcome texts dealing with (but not limited to) the following topics:

- Ships’ spatial boundaries, common areas, and makeshift private divisions;
- Habits developed to provide a sense of privacy at sea;
- Privacy and surveillance at sea;
- Maritime issues of gender and sexuality;
- Private communication and communication strategies at sea;
- Laws and regulations regarding interactions between crewmates;
- Practices of privacy at sea in contrast with at shore;
- Creation of privacy through objects and gestures;
- Maritime culture in relation to privacy.

The language of this publication is English. The volume will be peer-reviewed and aims to be open access. Please submit an abstract (max. 500 words) and a short CV on the link bellow no later than July 14, 2020.
Complete selected texts (max. 6000 words) must be submitted by February 2021.
