Join the Graduate Centre for Europe (GCfE) at the University of Birmingham, UK for an online presentation and discussion of Emile Chabal's recently published book "France"!

France since 1940: A Conversation with Emile Chabal

At 4.30 on 16 November 2020, Dr Simon Jackson (University of Birmingham) and our very own Sonia Lamrani (GCfE) will be in conversation with Dr Emile Chabal (University of Edinburgh) to discuss his recently published book „France“, a history of the country since 1940. Described by early reviews as „a major achievement“ and „a highly polished introduction to contemporary France“, Chabal’s analysis ranges widely, touching upon politics, society, culture and the legacies of the country’s colonial past.

A leading expert on 20th century French History, Chabal’s previous works include, „A Divided Republic: Nation, State and Citizenship in Contemporary France“, (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2015) and the edited volume „France since the 1970s: History, Politics and Memory in an Age of Uncertainty“ (London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2014). Please join us for what will doubtless be a fascinating conversation about contemporary French history!
