Das Symposium diskutiert die ideologischen Wurzeln von Chiles sogenannter „Autoritärer und geschützter Demokratie“, ihre Umsetzung in der Verfassung von 1980, die Mobilisierung und den Widerstand gegen diesen angeblichen demokratischen Vorzeigestaat innerhalb und außerhalb Chiles und schließlich ihren Niedergang.

The symposium sets out to explore the ideological origins of Chile’s so-called “Authoritarian and Protected Democracy,” its rendition into the 1980 Constitution, the mobilization and resistance to this alleged democratic state model within and outside Chile, and its ultimate decline.

El simposio propone explorar los origines ideológicos de la así llamada “democracia autoritaria y protegida” de Chile, su promulgación en la Constitución de 1980, la movilización y resistencia contra el supuesto estado-modelo democrático dentro y fuera de Chile y finalmente su ocaso.

The Rise and Fall of Chile’s “Authoritarian Democracy” (1970-2020)

On October 25, 2020, Chileans voted overwhelmingly to annul Augusto Pinochet’s 1980 constitution. Following a year after mass protests, the country’s citizens are thereby on a path to fully recovering the public sovereignty lost ever since Augusto Pinochet’s coup d’état against Salvador Allende in 1973. The present symposium sets out to explore the ideological origins of Chile’s so-called “Authoritarian and Protected Democracy,” its rendition into the infamous 1980 Constitution, the mobilization and resistance to this alleged democratic state model within and outside Chile, and its ultimate decline. If successful, this mini-conference could become a basis for an original, and indeed timely, special issue on Chile’s 1980 Constitution in a Latin American history/Latin American studies journal.

In this symposium, we seek to touch on the following interconnected themes:
- The national and international right-wing ideologies and networks informing Pinochet’ brand of authoritarianism.
- The influence of Chilean authoritarianism in Latin America during the Cold War.
- The national and international contexts of the 1980 constitutional process (human rights violations; changes in the Cold War balance and in USA foreign relations)
- The Chilean transition to democracy and the efforts to either modify or invalidate the 1980 constitution, 1980-1992.
- The political, legal, and social consequences of the 1980 Constitution (the “authoritarian clauses”); the Constitution as a basis for the Chilean political, economic and social order).

Ascenso y caída de la “democracia autoritaria” chilena (1970-2020)

El 25 de octubre de 2020, chilenos y chilenas votaron con gran mayoría para anular la Constitución de 1980, impulsada por Augusto Pinochet. Después de un año de protestas masivas los y las ciudadanos están en camino de recuperar completamente la soberanía popular que se había perdido desde el golpe de Estado liderado por Pinochet contra Salvador Allende en 1973. El simposio propone explorar los origines ideológicos de la así llamada “democracia autoritaria y protegida” de Chile, su promulgación en la Constitución de 1980, la movilización y resistencia contra el supuesto estado-modelo democrático dentro y fuera de Chile y finalmente su ocaso. En el caso de sea exitoso, este simposio podría ser la base para un número especial sobre la Constitución de 1980 de Chile en una revista de historia latinoamericana/de estudios latinoamericanos.

En el simposio buscamos tocar los siguientes temas interrelacionados:
- Ideologías y redes de derecha a nivel nacional e internacional que marcaron el autoritarismo del estilo de Pinochet
- La influencia del autoritarismo chileno en Latinoamérica durante la Guerra Fría
- El contexto nacional e internacional del proceso constitucional de 1980 (violaciones de derechos humanos, cambios en el balance de la Guerra Fría y en la política exterior de EEUU)
- La transición chilena a la democracia y los esfuerzos de modificar o invalidad la Constitución de 1980, 1980-1992
- Las consecuencias políticas, legales y sociales de la Constitución de 1980 (las “cláusulas autoritarias”; la Constitución como base para el orden político, económico y social de Chile)
