Between Local and Translocal: Founding, Inhabiting and Appropriating Settlements

Internationale Tagung unter Leitung von Dr. Alexander Free und Prof. Dr. Karen Radner (LMU)

Everything perceived as being local is simultaneously in correspondence with a supra-local perspective, meaning that identity, for example, which draws on local elements, is strengthened in an interregional context. The phenomenon of such mutual influence of the local and trans-local dimensions ("glocalism") can already be observed in pre-modern societies: newly established settlements influence their surroundings, just as local continuities and discontinuities must be seen in connection with a changing global world, for example new settlements in connection with existing communities of an expanding Assyrian or Chinese empire.
