The Research Centre on Antigypsyism (RCA) at the Heidelberg University’s Department of History (Centre for European History and Cultural Studies) announces a research fellowship with an annual funding amount of 20,000 € and with project start date January 1st, 2024 (or between January 1st and May 1st, 2024, depending on the kind of scholarship; see below).

The research fellowship – initiated by the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation – is named in honour of Mr. Romani Rose, the long-time chair of the Central Council of German Sinti und Roma, and pays tribute to the decades of his commitment to human and civil rights.
The Romani Rose Fellowship is awarded to particularly gifted and committed researchers from countries in the European Union. The research fellowship is awarded in two forms, depending on the individual application:
- Doctoral scholarship for the preparation, development or completion of a doctorate. Funding will be provided for a term of twelve months, the amount of the grant is 1,666 € per month; the start date is January 1st, 2024.
- Postdoctoral scholarship for promoting career development after a completed doctorate. Funding will be provided for a term of eight months, the amount of the grant is 2,500 € per month; the start date can be between January 1st and May 1st, 2024. Habilitated researchers are also invited to apply.
Applicants are invited to present a research proposal on a self-selected topic. The research topic should be related to antigypsyism studies or a related field, such as racism research. Interdisciplinary approaches are particularly encouraged. The applications will be reviewed by a commission established at the Research Centre.
To benefit from the scientific exchange with other researchers, the scholarship holder is expected to be at the Research Centre on a regular basis. A workstation equipped with a personal computer will be provided. The fellow will have access to the on-site facilities which include RCA’s library and specialised collection. The Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma is also located nearby. The fellow is responsible for his/her accommodation (apartment search and rental fee). Traveling and living expenses are already included in the funding.
Application requirements:
- University degree
- Outstanding degree (for the doctoral scholarship) or outstanding doctorate or habilitation (for the postdoctoral scholarship).
Applicants must submit 1) a three-page proposal outlining the topic and objectives of their research project; 2) an overview of their previous studies and degrees as well as 3) a Curriculum Vitae in tabular form.
Since dealing with the topic of Antigypsyism requires a high degree of sensitivity, the RCA considers dialogue with those affected to be an integral part of its scientific practice. Therefore, applications from qualified young researchers from the Sinti and Roma communities are particularly welcome.
