The Eleanore and Harold Jantz Research Fellowships

Two fellowships, each for $2,500, are available in 2009 to researchers coming to the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library of Duke University to use the Harold Jantz Collection. The collection consists of German Baroque literature (some 3,500 titles) and another ca. 7,000 imprints reflecting Professor Jantz’s other collecting and scholarly interests, among them extensive post-Baroque holdings; German-Americana of all periods; the Age of Goethe; American-German and English-German literary relations; Rosicruciana and Occulta. There are also 170 Baroque-era manuscripts, some of which deal with alchemy, astrology, and Rosicrucianism, which are described in an online finding aid.

The German Baroque literature portion of the collection is described in the widely available bibliography titled German Baroque literature: a descriptive catalogue of the collection of Harold Jantz and a guide to the collection on microfilm. New Haven. Research Publications, 1974. Potential applicants are welcome to contact library staff at special-collections@duke.edu with questions they may have about the Jantz Collection in order to strengthen their applications.
