Greetings,

I am writing to you as the Director of the MA in Ancient Mediterranean Cultures jointly offered by the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. The MA in Ancient Mediterranean Cultures offers a unique approach to the study of the ancient world. Our graduate program provides students with a broad foundation for the interdisciplinary study of ancient cultures surrounding the Mediterranean basin, including the linguistic, analytical and communication skills necessary for future academic or non-academic employment.

The MA program joins the strengths of two departments: Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. It is offered by Classical Studies and Archaeology Departments, with vital involvement of Near Eastern specialists, and looks beyond the traditional boundaries of Classics graduate programs.

More specific information about the program can be found on our website:

http://classics.uwaterloo.ca/grad.htm

I would like to highlight some of the many funding opportunities we have available for incoming students:

- Paid Teaching Assistantship (TA) positions (140 hrs/term)
- Paid Research Assistantship (RA) positions (variable)
- University of Waterloo President’s Scholarship (Ontario Graduate Scholarship & Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Master's Scholarship recipients)
- University of Waterloo Entrance Scholarships
- University of Waterloo Merit Scholarships
- Phyllis Young Forsyth Graduate Entrance Award

I would also like to highlight the following particular opportunity:

For those who wish to focus on Hellenistic or Roman Asia Minor (preferably, but not necessarily related to ancient Galatia), there will be available up to three additional scholarships / RAs ranging from $3,000 to $7,000.

I will be happy to answer any questions you or any of your students may have regarding our program. The deadline for applications is 1 February 2010. Due to the lateness of the advertisement, applications may also be considered thereafter, but late applicants are strongly encouraged to contact me as soon as possible.

All the very best,

-Dr. David Porreca.
