The Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History

Details of the Award for 2011

The Fraenkel Prize, sponsored by Mr Ernst Fraenkel OBE, joint President of the Library and former Chairman, will be awarded for an outstanding work of twentieth-century history in one of the Wiener Library’s fields of interest, ie the political history of Central and Eastern Europe; Jewish history; the two world wars; antisemitism; and the ideologies and movements of political extremism and totalitarianism.

Two distinct awards will be made:

Category A, open to all entrants. The length, not counting references and the bibliography must not be below 50,000 words and not exceed 150,000 words.

Category B, open to entrants who have yet to publish a major monograph. The length, not counting references and the bibliography, must not be below 25,000 words and not exceed 100,000 words.

The work must be written in English, French or German and be unpublished in any language at the deadline for submissions.

Amount of money/prize awarded:
The prize for entries in Category A is $6,000 and for entries in category B, the award is $4,000.

Restrictions:
The panel reserves the right not to consider any work that falls outside the specified subject areas or exceeds the word limit.

How to apply for the Award:

To enter the Fraenkel Prize 2011, please refer to the submission requirements below and sent to: PA to the Director, The Wiener Library, 4 Devonshire Street, London, W1W 5BH, no later than Friday 29 April 2011.

Requirements:
- Two copies (non-returnable) of the entry, one in manuscript printed doubled sided and bound, and one on a CD. Entrants may, if they prefer, send their electronic copy as a file attachment to an email.

- A short curriculum vitae accompanying the manuscript both in hard copy and as an electronic file.

- NB Please state clearly which category of the prize (see above) the manuscript is being entered for.
