British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships at Warwick

German Studies at the University of Warwick would like to support outstanding post-doctoral scholars making applications to the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme (open to EU citizens and applicants with prior affiliation to UK academia). We are able to support scholars pursuing a project with a strong literary studies, cultural studies or history of ideas component. For further information on eligibility and deadlines see below.

Warwick is one of the leading research universities in the UK (see also http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/profile/research). The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is one of the leading sites of research in its associated disciplines in the UK. In the 2014 REF, our research outputs were ranked 5th in the UK. 80% of our research and 80% of our 'impact' were ranked at 4 or 3, and 100% of our environment was similarly ranked as world-leading or internationally excellent. Our overall output ranking places us at the top of the Russell Group of large research universities in the UK.

German Studies at Warwick is renowned for its strong cultural studies profile, considering cultural production in the context of historical, social, and political developments. Research interests in the department range across the whole of the modern period, from the eighteenth-century Enlightenment to the present day, with notable areas of expertise in constructions of nation, gender and ethnicity, German Romanticism, the culture of the Weimar period, psychoanalysis, trauma theory, German-Jewish literature, antisemitism, cultures of memory, post-war poetry, diasporic cultures (film and literature), travel writing, post-war cinema (including East German cinema), Orientalism, Islam and East-West cultural differences within German traditions, as well as the role played by German speaking thinkers and practitioners in the development of the critical canon of cultural theory and film theory. We are interested in supporting research projects in any of these and related areas.

German Studies, and the School of Modern Languages as a whole, offer a lively research culture and strong cross-disciplinary ties to other departments in the Humanities, and we also welcome applications for suitable cross-disciplinary projects. The School strongly promotes innovative research in several interdisciplinary fields such as film history and aesthetics, postcolonial and transnational studies, translation studies, war, trauma and memory studies, and representations of disability, gender, sexuality, and cultural identity. Collaborative research within the Humanities is also fostered by a number of interdisciplinary research centres (more information at http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/hrc/aboutus/researchcentres), such as the Humanities Research Centre, the Centre for Research in Philosophy, Literature and the Arts, the Social Theory Centre, the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender, the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance, the Warwick Eighteenth Century Centre or the Global History and Culture Centre.

With around twelve postdoctoral fellows and around fifty postgraduate researchers currently working within the School, the environment for early-career researchers is a vibrant and welcoming one.
