The names Marbach, Weimar, and Wolfenbüttel stand for three institutions united by more than 500 years of German and European ideas, literature, and culture. The German Literature Archive Marbach, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel collect, preserve, and provide access to sources that are crucial to the study of German literary and intellectual traditions, and their research focus is devoted to studying the long-term transformations of cultural heritage in Germany.
The intern will support the work of the research departments and one of the research association's projects during a four to six weeks stay at one of the three institutions. The program aims to provide students from around the world with the opportunity to apply their skills in a professional internship setting, helping them to gain archival and library work experience. The program will allow participants to develop a deeper understanding of German literature and culture while acquiring practical skills and knowledge that will be useful throughout their careers. The program will also provide an insight into the area of digital humanities, now an indispensable aspect of humanities research.
Interns will be able to spend half their allotted time on their own research using the holdings of the respective institution.

The German Literature Archive is one of the most significant literary and cultural institutions in the world. Its collections bring together and preserve an abundance of valuable sources of literary and intellectual history from 1750 to the present day. The archive comprises around 1,400 papers and collections of authors and scholars, archives of literary publishers and over 450,000 images and objects. The library is the largest special collection of modern German literature and includes about one million volumes, alongside the collected libraries of more than 160 authors and collectors. The Schiller National Museum and the Museum of Modern Literature, display the manuscripts, books, images and objects of the German Literature Archive.
/Weimar/
The Klassik Stiftung Weimar is a unique ensemble of cultural memorial sites. With more than 20 museums, palaces, historic houses, parks as well as literary and art collections, it is one of the largest and most significant cultural institutions in Germany. Its research activities are based on the cultural heritage which is preserved and scientifically classified in its museums and historic buildings, the Duchess Anna Amalia Library and the Goethe and Schiller Archives. They focus on the era of Weimar Classicism and its effects on the art and culture of the 19th century as well as on the modernity with Friedrich Nietzsche and Bauhaus.
/Wolfenbüttel/
The Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel (HAB) is one of the oldest, authentically preserved libraries in the world. Not only is the HAB a storehouse of intact cultural memory, but also the central, non-university research and study centre for European cultural history of the Middle Ages and Early Modernity. Its collection of manuscripts and prints is like no other in northern Germany and the library owns a number of extensive special collections and deposits. Of the one million imprints which make up today’s collection, 410,000 were printed before 1850. Of these works, 3,500 are incunables printed before 1600, 75,000 were printed in the sixteenth, 150,000 in the seventeenth centuries.

Who can Apply
- The intern should be an advanced student (masters or doctoral level) enrolled in the humanities program
- The intern should be interested in the work of a modern research archive, library collections, and/or the digital humanities research
- Candidates are expected to demonstrate competence in written and spoken German (B2-level or better)

Internship Period
Candidates may apply for any of the above listed institutions (based on skills and interests), for an internship in 2021, lasting four to six weeks. The candidate should state a preferred starting date for the internship. Please note that the ongoing pandemic situation and the resulting regulations also have be taken into account.
Grants
Interns receive weekly stipends of 235,- €.
Accommodation
Accommodation has to be arranged and financed by the intern. The coordinator of the institution can assist by sending a list of suggested housing opportunities.
