Professorship in East Asian Art History

The appointment will be at the rank of either full or associate professor (ordentliche or ausserordentliche Professur) with tenure and begin 1 August 2023.

Applicants must have a significant record of excellence in teaching and research in either Chinese, Japanese, or Korean art history, competence in the relevant languages, innovative theoretical and methodological perspectives, and an international scholarly network.

The successful candidate is expected to teach broadly, across multiple periods and regions; be familiar with current theoretical debates and questions of methodology; and be willing to actively engage in topics pertaining to collection history. Teaching languages are English and German. Non-German speaking candidates are expected to acquire a professional knowledge of German within the first three years of appointment. The participation in the university self-administration and the collaboration with the Institute of Art History’s other chairs will be highly appreciated, as will interdisciplinary engagement with colleagues from other departments, and from cantonal, national and international institutions.

To be considered for the position, the applicant must have completed a PhD and a second book or equivalent achievements (habilitation or equivalent) in the field of East Asian art history. The University of Zurich strives to increase the percentage of women in leading positions. We therefore encourage applications from qualified female researchers.

Applications are to be submitted online exclusively and must be received no later than 12 January 2022.
