The Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies of the Faculty of Philology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is looking for a Research Assistant/Associate – PhD student (f/m/x) for 4 years – 31.08.2027 (project end), 25,8895 hours per week, TVL E13.

The ERC funded project “Late Ottoman Palestinians: Social and Cultural Dynamics in an Eastern Mediterranean Society during the Age of Empire, 1880–1920” (LOOP), led by Johann Büssow, seeks to open up new perspectives on social and cultural dynamics in late Ottoman Palestine. In the Eastern Mediterranean, the four decades between 1880 and 1920 were a time of imperialism, globalisation, and Ottoman state building, but also of profound social differentiation fuelled by an unprecedented degree of human mobility and migration. Therefore, in this period we find the roots of many social formations that have remained relevant until the present. Based on an analysis of Ottoman census data and complementary sources, the project will analyse modes of social differentiation as well as coping strategies at both the individual and communal level. It is carried out by an interdisciplinary team led by Professor Johann Büssow (Islamic Studies), in close cooperation with RUB's Digital Humanities Center.
