The Chair of Eastern European History at the University of Konstanz is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position in the context of its strategic programme "Violence in East and West: Towards an Integrated History of the 20th Century Europe", funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Postdoctoral Position "Violence in East and West"

The University of Konstanz is one of the eleven Excellence Universities in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy.

The Chair of Eastern European History at the Department of History and Sociology invites applications for a postdoctoral position (salary grade 13 TV-L, 100 percent) in the context of the Chair’s strategic programme “Violence in East and West: Towards an Integrated History of the 20th Century Europe”.

The position is available initially for four years starting on 01.01.2024 with the prospect of a further two years subject to continued funding by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Your Responsibilities:

- coordinate the Chair’s strategic programme “Violence in East and West: Towards an Integrated History of the 20th Century Europe”
- develop and conduct own research project
- contribute to teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of Modern European History (2 hours per week)
- involvement in research funding bids
- contribute to the development of international collaborations
- participation in the organisation of conferences

Your Competencies:

- applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion)
- research focus on the history of violence in 20th century Europe (preferably from a comparative and transnational perspective)
- good working knowledge of English; at least passive knowledge of German
- good coordination skills
